Looking for Othello

The visitor/actor enters the illuminated and immaculate space, slowly releasing disarticulated waves and flux of objects, sounds and « abandonned » melodies. The visitor/actor moves around, takes possession of space and time. He begins step by step to experiment with the pounding visual and audible waves, to arrange and compose, constantly relocating this chaotic choregraphy of objects and noises into a new rythmic, spatial and temporary score through his actual presence and own choice of movements.

Modulation Corridor is a space where video sequences are showing different packing materials and objects, all issued from our environment. These animated sequences appear in form of « choregraphed » visual and acoustic loops. Their fluid and floating aspect underlines the emptiness of sense and necessity of the acting objects as they are competely removed from their original functionality and particularly from the sounds they are originally associated with. The Sounds emerge from the lowest possible amplitude, silence, and build on amplifying very soft sounds coming from the object itself or its environment. You perceive a microscopic approach of the inside of a sound surface, enlarging the single elements of a complex texture with the possibility of separating them from each other and recompose them in a different way, creating melodic and rhythmic motion below the surface of environmetal noises, which we are exposed to in everyday life. The corridor is divided into several fields . Entering them the visitor triggers motion capturing sensors which control start, progression and superimposition of the sequences.

The visitor gets the possibility to appropriate the rythmic and spatial control of the device. The more visitors enter the space, the more sensors are activated, leading into a progressive saturation of pictures and sounds. From emptiness to overload, from a feeling of lack up to a sensation of excessive demand this space offers an infinitive amount of perceptive variations depending on the number of visitors and their moving around in the space. Very soon the visitor face the borderline between necessity and fascination, entertainment and disgust.

The notion of« regulation » is the core of the device, generating the confrontation between individual perception and collective implication in a limited space. This device leads us to a reflexion on many of our own behaviours : our capacity to control and withstand an environment, the definition of this environment itself and its limits and finally our responsability of our choices towards the increasing emancipation and alienation generated by this environment.
